Almedalsveckan has been held on the island of Gotland in over forty years. It all began in 1968 when the then Education Minister Olof Palme spoke from a lorry at the Powder Tower in Almedalen.

The early years of political speech has evolved to become the largest political meeting place. Through democracy and openness gives the week all who want to debate social issues opportunity to participate. The openness and accessibility during Almedalsveckan is unique both for Sweden and the rest of the world. All events during the week are free and open to all. The parliamentary political parties are the core of Almedalsveckan. Their participation in seminars, press conferences and speeches from Almedalen forms the basis of the week. Every parliamentary party has its own day and Almedalen Week runs from Sunday week 26 to Sunday week 27.
